STRANGE BUT TRUE! GREAT FAMOUS PRANKSTERS

Timothy Dexter (1747-1806)
American self-made man who arranged a mock funeral for himself to see how many people would turn up. He then interrupted the proceedings  in full flow in his baronial mansion, almost causing the assembled 3000 guests apoplexy. His wife wasn't weeping as much as he'd hoped so he throttled her. His action produced the requisite tears, albeit for all the wrong reasons.

7th Earl of Barrymore (1769-1793)
This Regency aristocrat (nicknamed "Hellgate") was addicted to practical jokes, his favourite of which was putting coffins, containing servants made up to look like corpses, in a vertical position outside people's doors with lid open and then ringing the bell.

Sir Herbert Draper Beerbohm Tree (1853-1917)
Once went into posh lady's garden and took off all the labels on her roses, replacing their Italian names with those of (in)famous criminals such as Dr Crippen.

Stan Laurel (1890-1965)
Simulated epileptic fits at dinner parties by placing Alka-Seltzer tablets under his tongue and spitting them out as if they were foam. He once pretended to be chocking to death after memistake'.Ggggowing up' food he had hidden in a hot water bottle he kept under his jacket.

Billy Buttress
The 19th-century ventriloquist would mime a cat's miaows, receiving much pleasure from watching fellow travellers search desperately for the feline, laughing when they found only his dummy-a stuffed cat.

Lewis Carroll (1932-98)
The author often called for children by ringing their doorbell, then going down on all fours and barking through the letterbox.

Alasdair Gray
The Scottish novelist, fond of practical jokes, once had his publishers put an erratum slip in the first edition of a novel of his watch read 'this erratum slip had been inserted by mistake'
