WORLD FAMOUS PEOPLE AND THEIR TERRIBLE SLEEPING HABIT

WILLIAM WILKIE (1721-72)
The sleeping conditions of this Scottish poet beggared belief. He hated clean sheets, and when he was staying at someone's house, he would bring his own dirty sheets with him...and two dozens of blankets to go on top of them.

BENJAMIN DISRAELI (1804-81)
The British Prime Minister and novelist used to sleep in bed with its four legs immersed in bowls of salt to ward off evil spirits.

WILLIAM EWART GLADSTONE (1809-98)
Used to take a stone hot water bottle to bed with him, filling it with tea. He only slept for a few hours a night and used to drink the tea when he awoke.

CHARLES DICKENS (1812-70)
Couldn't sleep or write, unless he was facing north. To ward off insomnia he always lay in the centre of his bed, measuring the distance to both edges with his arms to make sure they were exactly the same.

ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL (1847-1922)
The inventor had to stay up all night anytime he had an early morning appointment as he suffered from ferocious headaches upon waking every day.

DWIGHT EISENHOWER (1890-1969)
The U.S. general and president kept a shotgun beside his bed to shoot crows, cats and anything else that disturbed his sleep.

JAMES THURBER (1894-1961)
A chronic insomniac, Thurber tried everything in the book to get to sleep, including spelling words backwards and rewriting Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven" from the viewpoint of the bird.

CLARA BOW (1905-65)
The first "It" Girl was a lifelong insomniac after a childhood experience of her mother charging into her bedroom one night armed with a butcher's knife trying to stab her.

JOAN DIDION
The Californian writer slept in the same rooms as her manuscripts when she was composing then, viewing them as children, she wanted to be near them.
