Giovanni Casanova (1725-98)
Made love to 132 women in his life, a tally that isn't huge considering his reputation in this regard. That number comprised servants, members of the royalty, prostitutes, nuns and even a theologian. He had sex with one woman 12 times in one 24 hour period. For contraception he sometimes constructed a diaphragm from a lemon. Casanova was also a proponent of incest, remarking once, "I have never been able to understand how a father could tenderly love his charming daughter without having slept with her at least once.
Catherine the Great (1729-96)
The Russian empress was alleged to have had sex six times a day claiming it was to cure her insomnia. She was even supposed to have copulated with a horse on one occasion.
Victor Hugo (1802-85)
A womaniser throughout his life, Hugo made love to his wife nine times on his wedding night. He had an affair with a 27 year old laundress when he was 70. Thirteen years later he was still sexually active.
Hans Christian Andersen (1805-75)
The writer of fairy tales visited brothels, but for no other motive than to speak to the prostitutes.
Frank Harris (1854-1931)
This author kept a record of all his lovers, reputed to number over 2000 and deposited the details with Llyod's of London for safe keeping, insuring the file in question for $150,000. His book, " My Life and Loves", based on this list was banned for 40 years in the U.S. and U.K. but it sold well in the Parisian bookshops.
Gabriele D'Annunzio (1863-1938)
This Italian author and aviator has such an active libido he even carried condoms into battle with him, because he believed a man had to be prepared for every eventuality. He's also said to have used strychnine as an aphrodisiac.
