When he was at Cambridge, the university had a rule against students keeping dogs or cats, so the resourceful poet decided to buy a trained bear instead: there being nothing in the regulations to prohibit pet bears.

The French poet was noted for taking his pet lobster for walks around Paris, especially in the gardens of the Palais Royale, on a lead. When asked why, he replied, 'Because unlike dogs, they can't bark at you'

The so-called lady with the lamp was said to have owned sixty cats and also a small owl that she kept in her pocket at all times.
