Williams Shakespeare (1564-1616)
Research indicates that great bard could have been high on dope
when he wrote his plays, as scientists have discovered clay pipes at his Stratford home which contain traces of cannabis.

Queen Victoria (1819-19010)
Although few could imagine the normally staid queen getting stoned, she used marijuana to relieve menstrual pains.

Antonin Artaud (1896-1948)
The French playwright,actor,director and theorist of the Surrealist movement, who had a profound  influence on post-war theatre, was addicted to both opium and heroin. He once said, 'If i stop taking drugs, that means death. Only death can cure me of the infernal palliative, from which only a precisely calculated absence, not too long in duration, allows me to be what i am.

Truman Capote (1924-84)
Addicted to alcohol and pills for most of his life, the author used to spread the latter out in front of him like sweets as he experimented with different combinations for the best hit. After he had taken these cocktails he often suffered from severe hallucinations, causing him to phone friends and implore them to rescue him from ghosts.

Elvis Presley (1935-77)
In his later years he couldn't perform without being tanked up with prsecription pills. Sometimes he came off stage without even knowing he'd been on. At one point he actually wanted to buy a drugstore so he would have automatic access to whatever he needed. During the last two years of his life he received more than 1,900 doses of uppers and downers from his doctor.

Syd Barret (1946-)
This sometime Pink Floyd band member spent much of his life out of his tree on LSD. His over-indulgence in this regard caused him to do some pretty mad things both on and off the stage. He smashed a mandolin over one girlfriend's head, and locked another in a room for three days, shoving a ration of biscuits under the door periodically so she didn't starve. When she was eventually rescued he locked himself in instead and refused to come out for a week.
