Leonardo da Vinci (1452 -1519)
Was so fascinated by ugly people he often followed them for hours.
John Ruskin (1819-1900)
The artist was so aghast at the sight of his wife’s naked body on their wedding night that he fled the boudoir in terror. (Apparently he had never seen a woman’s pubic hair before) The marriage was never consummated. ‘A suicide committed daily’ he called it. He eventually went mad, running screaming from a University podium one day in mid-lecture.
Pierre Auguste Renoir (1841- 1919)
Was so fond of nature he refused even to kill an ant, feeling this would upset the balance of things. According to his son Jean, it irked him so much if he happened to step on dandelion unwittingly as he was walking through fields that he would swerve dramatically if he found himself approaching one on the next turn.
Vincent Van Gogh (1850-90)
Van Gogh used to beat himself with a stick when his work didn’t measure up to his expectations. He once tried to commit suicide by ingesting oil paints and kerosene when the painting was going badly.
Van Gogh was almost as obsessed with women as he was with painting. He cut off his left ear in 1888 out of frustration over the fact that his friend Paul Gauguin was more successful with a particular one. He handed it to her in an envelope and she fainted when she saw it. He painted a picture of himself after the mutilation entitled ‘Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear’.
Henri de Toulouse- Lautrec (1864-1901)
As a result of alcoholism, syphilis and depression, Toulouse-Lautrec was beset with hallucinations, most of which had him struggling with imaginary enemies like a savage pack of terriers, a monstrous headless elephant that prowled around his room trying to drive him against his bed, and even a cardboard elephant. He was eventually committed to a lunatic asylum.
Salvador Dali (1904- 89)
Trimmed his huge mustache in 1954 because he felt it was picking up signals from space and thus distancing him from mere earthlings. Dali had a variety of odd habits, including sitting in a cold bath painting if the weather was hot, and pouring coffee and hot milk down his chest in the morning because he enjoyed the sensation.
